Some of the Points Fred and Craig Discussed

Find the cheapest gas wherever you are using connected GPS, or your GPS-enabled smartphone.

Never forget where you left your car in a giant amusement park or stadium parking lot. Mark it with your GPS as a waypoint, or use an iPhone3G app made especially for the purpose.

Use Google Maps to find and upload all of your vacation destinations to your GPS (connected GPS models only - Garmin and TomTom) before you leave. You won't need to waste vacation time searching destinations and inputting addresses. Also, Google Maps lets you see entire categories of destinations (museums in Pittsburgh, for example); select the ones you want to visit, and then click to upload them to GPS.

Use your GPS-enabled smartphone. My recommended apps for finding AAA discounts near you, track flights, check the weather forecast, navigate, and more.

Pros and cons (and costs) of renting a GPS unit with your rental car.

How to geotag your vacation photos and how to make best use of geotagged photos to organize and display travel shots.

About Fred

Fred Zahradnik has served as About.com's guide to GPS products, services and trends since 2007. Fred is a pro-consumer technical product guru. Follow Fred on Twitter @fzahradnik_GPS. Experience:

As a former technical editor and online editor for Bicycling Magazine (12 years), and online editor for Men's Health magazine, Fred has managed dozens of buyer's guides and reviewed hundreds of products for publication. He has published hundreds of articles on GPS consumer products and services, GPS science and technology, and military uses of GPS. Education:

Fred holds a B.A. in journalism from The Pennsylvania State University. From Fred Zahradnik:

I've been fascinated by GPS technology since I first tried one of the early handheld receivers. It was slow, and the screen was gray and small, but it was still a marvel. Today, mobile navigation is a rapidly growing, multi-billion-dollar market, and GPS technology is finding its way into a wide range of products.

It's second nature for me to look at technology from the consumer's point of view. This site is for and about what GPS can do for you, how to find products with the features you need and at the best value, and how you can have some fun with this technology!
