About E-Learn Magazine

eLearn Magazine, http://www.elearnmag.org/, is a free online magazine published by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Our readers are from all over the world and from academia and industry. Some of our most popular features include my annual predictions column and the interviews I do with people making strides to improve online education. I also write a blog - my most recent post is at http://blog.acm.org/elearn/2009/05/its_a_training_problem.html

Some of the Points Lisa and Craig discussed

  • Students of all ages need to be taught better information literacy skills to be able to become adept at finding information on their own
  • Informal learning is growing in all aspects of life and the workforce yet is not promoted in schools
  • Quality is essential in e-learning - the increasing availability of east-to-use tools does not reduce the need for expertise in course development and delivery
  • There is a value with almost any course, online or in the classroom, to provide opportunities for students to meet and share experiences following a course once they have started applying what they have learned - this type of peer-learning can be more effective than any other learning process
