Some of the Points Frank and Craig Discussed
The lithium-ion (compact size and minimized weight) and Nickel Cadmium, or NiCad (not a new innovation, but a proven, cost-effective technology), batteries are cross-compatible and interchangeable with any PORTER-CABLE 18-volt cordless tool – allowing users to choose between more power and run-time or compact size and light weight, depending on the demands of the job.
Lithium-ion battery technology, which is used in everything from cell phones to computers, is in its infancy with regards to its use in power tools. The technology has entered the market in a variety of forms – high-voltage platforms, long runtime packs, compact packs, etc. At its core, the benefit of lithium-ion is its greater energy density per battery cell compared to other chemistries. While somewhat pricier versus alternative chemistries, the technology is becoming more affordable for a broader audience and continues to evolve.
PORTER-CABLE developed the line’s battery system, which includes both lithium-ion and NiCad batteries, from the ground up to specifically address what end-users told us they needed.
With this approach, we are incorporating the latest advancements in lithium-ion technology and allowing users to tailor their 18-volt cordless system to their specific needs.
Starting their system with a multi-tool combo kit (including core tools, batteries and chargers),
the user can tailor their system by expanding on it with additional tools (sold without batteries and chargers) and different power options. This approach ensures the user gets the most value out of their customized system.
PORTER-CABLE brand’s new line is designed for the user who wants professional quality at a good value – be it a professional who desires a more reasonably priced professional-grade tool for applications they might perform less often or the do-it-yourselfer who requires increased tool performance and features beyond what is currently available from consumer power tool brands.
Available nationwide through Lowe’s and other independent hardware and woodworking retailers, the new line was first introduced in the fall 2008 and expanded upon starting in spring 2009.
FACT: A recent survey from This Old House magazine found that more than 77% of respondents planned a minor project themselves in the next 12 months (TOH Home Team Panel vs. General Population - March 2009)
FACT: While saving money is certainly a driving factor, Lowe’s also found a surprising 32% of homeowners give enjoyment as the main motivator for doing projects (MediaPost, April 15)
These tools are available through Lowe’s, which has 20 different store locations in the Boston area.
